A cartridge collector and a bag filter do the same job in the same way: dust collects on the outside of a fabric, a compressed-air pulse knocks it off, and the dust falls into a bin. The differences that matter are mechanical.
Cartridge collectors
A pleated element packs a lot of media into a small volume — that is the whole point. Expect:
- Small footprint. One 200 mm × 1000 mm cartridge carries 5–7 m² of media where a bag of the same height carries roughly half that.
- Simple cartridge changes. One clamp, one element, no cage to handle. That matters when the collector sits above a production line.
- Best with fine, dry dust. Welding fume, laser fume, grinding dust, powder handling.
The trade-off is the pleat itself. If the dust is sticky, fibrous or very coarse, it bridges between pleats and pulse cleaning stops working — which is when a bag or a pre-separator is the better answer.
Bag filters
Bags have no pleats to bridge, so they tolerate dust that cartridges cannot: fibrous material, damp streams, and heavy loads where the media needs to be shaken or pulsed hard. They also handle high temperatures more easily, because the bag can be made from a wider range of media without a pleating step.
Against that: a bag filter for the same airflow is physically much larger, and each bag change takes longer.
The practical rule
- Fine, dry, light dust, and floor space at a premium → cartridge collector.
- Fibrous, damp or very coarse dust, or a tall silo with room to spare → bag filter.
- Mixed streams → keep the cartridge collector, but drop the coarse fraction out first with a cyclone or a spark catcher.
